South Shore Parades and Festivals

Recently I went to a “Newcomers” evening in Liverpool, Nova Scotia.  Although living here now well over a decade, and being a first generation Canadian, I’m forever a Come From Away… but that’s OK, as I arrived on the South Shore by choice and not just birth luck!  Check out this professional video of the original landowners before me

So as I was saying, this is my chosen Homeland.  Such is also the case of the talented videographers above, who I met that evening in Liverpool.  My children have the advantage of already being born here.  However, learning how to be a Maritimer is still required!

Attending community events, working in service clubs, and volunteering to keep this rural place special are things that seem worth passing on to our youth.

…My daughter was the youngest “puller” at the local Exhibition, and didn’t weigh-in enough for the final team. ( The perseverance and patience of trying, was a success regardless of the winning or losing).  This is the culture of the South Shore and one worth moving here for.

Famous Lunenburg Business for Sale

 

Trot in Time started in 1996, with an old carriage in the owner’s front yard; basically a lawn ornament. One day a local senior suggested a horse be borrowed to take him for a ride in that buggy. After a good measure of work, including a full refit of the 1888-built cart by shipwright Lloyd Lantz, he got his ride.

The name Trot in Time came from a  elementary student contest won by then third grader, Claire Coulter.  Claire got a pizza party with her friends, in thanks for her great idea. The tour with Trot in Time is like stepping back in time complete with a real wooden carriage – a trot in time!

The first horse came from Gregg and Jenny Ernst  who live near Lunenburg.  Jenny had been doing wagon rides with her horse, Cindy, but with ten children it was getting too hard to manage that business. And so Cindy became Trot in Time‘s first steed. She retired in 2000 and laid down for a final rest in 2003. Please visit her beautiful memorial page.

In 2000 the owner of Trot in Time was able to buy a property, and restore the barn and an old Cape house, only 300 feet outside the Lunenburg town limits. From there, as the saying goes, it’s all history: Cindy and he hit the streets for buggy rides the next two years.

In the third year a horse called Bob was purchased. The fourth year a replica carriage was added… By the ninth year it was three carriages! Today they have six horses, four carriages, six drivers, a ranch hand, a wagon house, and an ever expanding pasture.

Lunenburg and the South Shore area

Charming and close-knit, walking down its main streets is like walking through a book on old world architecture. Cape Cod style, Neo-Classical (Georgian), Gothic Revival, and Scottish (with five sided Scottish dormers), are just some of the styles that can be identified throughout the area.

The most famous architectural feature, affectionately known as the Lunenburg bump, is an extended central dormer that extends out and down from the roof to create an overhang over the main entrance. The whimsical feel of the town is made all the more enchanting by the use of eye-popping paint colours; one gets the feeling that you have stepped into a magical land from a children’s book.

Lunenburg County, which includes the towns of Chester, Bridgewater and Mahone Bay, has a population of 47,591 residents, of which 2,457 live in the town of Lunenburg. The rugged sea coastline is set against the backdrop of a gentle rolling landscape. South Shore

The South Shore is where the seafaring legacy of the Maritimes originated from. Home to the famous Bluenose schooner, and a welcomed port of call for other tall ships, Lunenburg is a centre for the history of the sea that defined the Province of Nova Scotia.

Built by immigrants of German and Swiss descent, Lunenburg was named in honor of King George II, Duke of Brunschweig-Lunenburg, the king under which the edict was given to provide free passage to those who would facilitate the building of towns in the new world (North America). Descendents of these founding families still live in the region, and are considered to be true Bluenosers, after the famous ship that was built along its shores.

Even though Lunenburg is relatively small in comparison to Halifax, it offers big city education that is globally-focused.
