Near tennis court and historic building & lot with provincial designation

Fantastic info provided by this seller, makes this central property well worth a look:

“This part of the Region of Queens Municipality provides great beauty; miles of beaches awaits your arrival, four seasons (with the mildest of Maritime winters) amid recreational amenities to suit everyone. Liverpool is a mere hour and a half from Halifax and can be reached by traveling the main highway #103, or for a much more leisurely drive along the coastline on the #3 highway, best known as the Lighthouse Route. It’s Regional Hospital has numerous doctors on staff, several dentists are in the town and there is an optometrist’s office. Some consider Liverpool to be the undiscovered gem of the South Shore and noted to be one of Canada‘s best kept secrets.

Maritime history is rich here in Liverpool and one cannot help but be taken back in time as one walks along Main Street, Market Street and Church Street.   Located on Church Street the Rossignol Cultural Centre combines 12 surprising and unusual museums in one. The Guide Sports, Hunting, Fishing and Mi’Kmaq Museum features images and artifacts of early guiding and native life. There are folk art, outhouse and apothecary museums and a re-created English Tea Room. The Wildlife Museum has an 18 foot giraffe, musk ox, polar bear, wolf, caribou and other animals from North America and Africa. Outside there are teepees, an early settler’s cabin, a yurt, a blockhouse and a re-creation of Maud Lewis’ tiny house.  The Liverpool Court House, a landmark Greek Revival temple style building, is also located on Church Street in the centre of Liverpool, NS. ”

South Shore Parades and Festivals

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

Recently I went to a “Newcomers” evening in Liverpool, Nova Scotia.  Although living here now well over a decade, and being a first generation Canadian, I’m forever a Come From Away… but that’s OK, as I arrived on the South Shore by choice and not just birth luck!  Check out this professional video of the original landowners before me

So as I was saying, this is my chosen Homeland.  Such is also the case of the talented videographers above, who I met that evening in Liverpool.  My children have the advantage of already being born here.  However, learning how to be a Maritimer is still required!

Attending community events, working in service clubs, and volunteering to keep this rural place special are things that seem worth passing on to our youth.

…My daughter was the youngest “puller” at the local Exhibition, and didn’t weigh-in enough for the final team. ( The perseverance and patience of trying, was a success regardless of the winning or losing).  This is the culture of the South Shore and one worth moving here for.

Ocean-centric activities aren’t the only aspect to Lunenburg/ Queens that deserves mentioning.  Farms that feed our future and lakes that supply our fresh water are amazing assets.  Small businesses have become large over time.

In addition to our resources is the Lifestyle, and one of the most interesting indicators for measuring the South Shore:  how is the level of Humour?  Folks here love a turn of phrase and jovial fun.  Where else would you see a quilt cover for a car body  to advertise a festival

Pine View Farms had to park last year’s car float with petunias growing out of its body.  This year another entry had  a tanker truck painted pink!

Yes, we’re an ‘understated’ parade of neighbours and lots of firetrucks — not just pom poms and loud music floats.   And then there’s the final parade entry (and no, it’s not Santa).

buggy ride74 Old Blue Rocks Road, Garden Lots

Trot in Time started in 1996, with an old carriage in the owner’s front yard; basically a lawn ornament. One day a local senior suggested a horse be borrowed to take him for a ride in that buggy. After a good measure of work, including a full refit of the 1888-built cart by shipwright Lloyd Lantz, he got his ride.

The name Trot in Time came from a  elementary student contest won by then third grader, Claire Coulter.  Claire got a pizza party with her friends, in thanks for her great idea. The tour with Trot in Time is like stepping back in time complete with a real wooden carriage – a trot in time!

trot in time horsebuggy ride

The first horse came from Gregg and Jenny Ernst  who live near Lunenburg.  Jenny had been doing wagon rides with her horse, Cindy, but with ten children it was getting too hard to manage that business. And so Cindy became Trot in Time‘s first steed. She retired in 2000 and laid down for a final rest in 2003. Please visit her beautiful memorial page.

In 2000 the owner of Trot in Time was able to buy a property, and restore the barn and an old Cape house, only 300 feet outside the Lunenburg town limits. From there, as the saying goes, it’s all history: Cindy and he hit the streets for buggy rides the next two years.

In the third year a horse called Bob was purchased. The fourth year a replica carriage was added… By the ninth year it was three carriages! Today they have six horses, four carriages, six drivers, a ranch hand, a wagon house, and an ever expanding pasture.

Trot in Time cares a great deal about their horses and invite visitors to schedule a visit (www.TrotInTime.ca) to the Exclusively listed hobby farm if they’d like to see how nice the animals live:  74 Old Blue Rocks Road, Garden Lots, Lunenburg County, NS, CANADA.

Lunenburg and the South Shore area

Friday, January 7th, 2011

Charming and close-knit, walking down its main streets is like walking through a book on old world architecture. Cape Cod style, Neo-Classical (Georgian), Gothic Revival, and Scottish (with five sided Scottish dormers), are just some of the styles that can be identified throughout the area. Robinson Harmsen bettina

The most famous architectural feature, affectionately known as the Lunenburg bump, is an extended central dormer that extends out and down from the roof to create an overhang over the main entrance. The whimsical feel of the town is made all the more enchanting by the use of eye-popping paint colours; one gets the feeling that you have stepped into a magical land from a children’s book.

Lunenburg County, which includes the towns of Chester, Bridgewater and Mahone Bay, has a population of 47,591 residents, of which 2,457 live in the town of Lunenburg. The rugged sea coastline is set against the backdrop of a gentle rolling landscape. The soil is rich and well drained by a network of lakes and small rivers and the weather is quite temperate, making it a favourable region for agricultural activity. From Christmas trees to cranberries, milk production to wine-making, you can certainly enjoy eating and drinking local in Lunenburg County.

South Shore

The South Shore is where the seafaring legacy of the Maritimes originated from. Ship-building, deep sea fishing and foundries are all still active as in yesteryear; in fact, you can still hear the ring of the blacksmith’s hammer as you walk along Lunenburg’s working waterfront. Home to the famous Bluenose schooner, and a welcomed port of call for other tall ships, Lunenburg is a centre for the history of the sea that defined the Province of Nova Scotia.

robinson harmsen bettina

Built by immigrants of German and Swiss descent, Lunenburg was named in honor of King George II, Duke of Brunschweig-Lunenburg, the king under which the edict was given to provide free passage to those who would facilitate the building of towns in the new world (North America). Descendents of these founding families still live in the region, and are considered to be true Bluenosers, after the famous ship that was built along its shores.

The South Shore is also noted for its many festivals that it holds throughout the year. Whether the event is associated with seafood, harvest time, art, music or theatre, chances are, when you are in Lunenburg, there is always something to celebrate.

Education

Even though Lunenburg is relatively small in comparison to Halifax, it offers big city education that is globally-focused. High quality local elementary and junior high schools that include French immersion  [and Waldorf], help students get a good educational grounding. And then, students in grades 10, 11 and 12 are bussed to the  high schools in Bridgewater that offers an excellent study environment and offers the globally-recognized International Baccalaureate program. Lunenburg Academy [is] just 2 minutes by car from The Toy Maker of Lunenburg, [see “An Invitation to Purchase A Lifestyle Business & Residence” at http://RobinsonHarmsen.com/house.php?det=113 Lunenburg Academy is a historic Victorian building with 98 students from grades Kindergarten through Five. In 2012 a brand new school is due to re-open in Lunenburg.]

Recreation

World class golf courses, sailing, boating, cross-country skiing, skating, biking, curling, and long seaside walks – Lunenburg certainly offers a recreational lifestyle that is to be envied. With a $31.5 million Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre due to be completed in the near future, which will contain a skating rink, [a large library], one six-lane 25 metre pool, and fitness and meeting space, it is clear that local leaders share a strong commitment to improving the quality of life for its citizens, and are eager to attract an increasing number of visitors, businesses, and newcomers into the area to live, work, and play.

Lunenburg Harbour

How would you like to live in a town that not only won the Port city of the Year, the Communities in Bloom’s Most Beautiful Small Town, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site? What about operating one of the most respected toy making businesses in Canada?  What if you could have both?  What if you could have your own manufacturing facility, administrative office, and your active lifestyle all within the bounds of your home sweet home?  Yes, what if – is now – a rare opportunity to own the lifestyle business of The Toy Maker of Lunenburg! After 30 years, the owners are selling their home and business to step back from the busyness of being entrepreneurs and step into the easy breezy way of life on Nova Scotia’s south shore.

Lunenburg Nova Scotia Toymaker

drying "fish"

The Toy Maker of Lunenburg has an internationally recognized brand; one that stands for the highest quality standards, a high level of integrity and excellence in customer service. The recent lead-paint scandals, especially related to toys, have shifted consumer’s attention away from choosing economical Chinese imports to choosing higher priced quality products. Classic wooden, handmade, and wool, cotton and cardboard toys have all seen a surge in demand – The Toy Maker of Lunenburg is no exception. Being hand-crafted in Nova Scotia, especially in the charming old town of Lunenburg, contributes to The Toy Maker’s products’ reputation of being made with old-world care and craftsmanship.

Handmade Push Toys

Beside the romance, and beyond the scandal, consumers are making their buying decisions with the environment in mind. The Toy Maker of Lunenburg prides itself on a high level of recycling and re-use in the manufacturing of its products. Their water-based paints are made in Western Europe, where the highest environmental standards in manufacturing are enforced, the wood is purchased from a supplier who does not use clear-cutting methods of harvesting, and all discarded paper products are shredded and recycled – even the sawdust is given to some friendly local guinea hens. The Toy Maker of Lunenburg’s business is busier than ever, which makes this the ideal time for someone to purchase it. Proud of the legacy they have built, the current owners will provide the new owners with hands-on training, mentoring and guidance
